Celexa is the brand name for the generic medication citalopram. It is sold in 10-mg oval, beige tablets, 20-mg oval, pink tablets and 40-mg oval, white tablets. It also comes in a peppermint-flavored oral liquid containing 10-mg of Celexa per 5-mL of liquid.
How to Find the Right Dose
The usual starting dose of Celexa is 20-mg once a day. Most people will increase to 40-mg per day after one week. A few people may require as much as 60-mg a day, but this is unusual and not recommended.
Most older adults should stick with 20-mg a day. This lower dose should also be used in patients with liver disease. An increase to 40-mg should only be made if the patient does not respond to treatment at the lower dose.
